Decisions decisions… paddle board or kayak

I need your help!

As you all know, a few months ago we decided to withdraw Alfie from traditional school and he's now home schooled instead. You can read about that here -https://sarahschocolatekitchen.com/blogs/news/more-and-more-people-are-choosing-to-deregister-their-children-from-school-to-home-ed-are-you-one-of-them

Seeing as we are spending an increasing amount of time together and at home, I'm currently considering what activities and hobbies would be appropriate for both of us to try.

Water babies

We both LOVE the water. I'm a self-professed water baby and can definitely clarify that Alfie is the same as me in that sense. We are very lucky to be surrounded by some beautiful rivers and streams and I'm recently contemplating a water activity/hobby for us both. I think it would do the world of good for both our physical health as well as our mental health.
Now, the question is ... which one?!
Inspired by the Olympics but definitely absolutely novices, I'm torn between paddle boarding and kayaking.

What's the difference between kayaking and paddle boarding?

According to Google (the epitome of truth lol) paddle boards are easier to get back onto, but they're also generally faster than kayaks. Paddle boards you paddle or stand, kayaks you sit... paddle boards are apparently easier for open waters and kayaks are more suited to tighter spaces as they can be steered easier.
I'm not the spring chicken I used to be, nor am I sporting a size 10 wet suit like I was back in the day either. I'm not phased by either of these things (love yourself for who you are, and all that) but I am aware that my waistline and age *might* have an impact on which is better for me to start up. I've considered doing both but it feels a bit like "all the gear, no idea" to be doing that 🤣
Will kayaking be easier because I'm sitting? Or will it be harder because I'm more restricted in movement and I imagine it's quite the upper body workout! Or will paddle boarding be easier because the board is wider so offers a bit more stability? Wow, who knew a decision about something like this would be so difficult haha.
Anyway, this is as far as my knowledge and expertise goes, so I'm looking for opinions and experiences from those who actually participate in one (or both) and can give me some insight please?!
