Favourite Film
Despite being a grown woman, owning a house, running two businesses, and raising a child for the last nine years, I have to be honest and tell you that my absolute favourite film of all time has to be Ratatouille.
Of all the films in the world that I've watched and loved, nothing comes close to that little rat living his best chef life.
I'm not sure if it's because I don't like conforming to the standard and this is one of those films that doesn't have a pretty princess or Knight in shining armour as the main character. It's a film centered on a literal rat who finds his way from the streets to being a sought-after chef in the city. Maybe it's because it's food focused too - that's always a good story baseline isn't it.
Though it's light hearted and comedic, and the selling points of the film centre around it being a fun, happy ending, family film, there's definitely some deeper meaning within it if you watch close enough.
Rats are seen as the vermin of society: it is assumed they are dirty, not wanted anywhere they go, are being caught and killed in inhumane traps because of how far down the hierarchy they are to those of us near the top of it (humans). They're definitely not wanted anywhere near a human kitchen. There's a deeper metaphor within the plot of natural human prejudice, and how we have these usually ill-informed and preconceived notions of what something is or should be.
We assume without knowledge and create a narrative without knowing all of the facts. It might be a part of our human nature, from way back when we'd have to protect ourselves from lions in caves and unknown plants or animals to survive, but it doesn't really excuse it in this day and age does it? Maybe we just need to do some more evolving.
Anyway, that got real deep reap quick, didn't it?! What's your favourite film?
I'm not sure I know two people who would answer this question the same! From the little poll I've done so far we've had: Harry Potter & the Goblet of Fire, The Others, Happy Gilmore, Pearl Harbour ... each one so different and that's just from a few people around me.
Access to films in abundance through streaming services is pretty much a given these days though so I think those choices are just going to keep growing. I'm a sucker for a classic personally.
My friend who's favourite film is The Others says it's not just the film itself but the association of the memories from around the time she used to watch it all the time - the nostalgia that comes with it.
There are just so many now that you'd think it'd be hard to choose, but not for me haha.
I might put it on tonight actually, with a non-alcoholic glass of wine and a couple of sweet treats.
