Waffles galore at our shop in Leigh on sea, Essex
August 24th might be a day in the calendar to celebrate cosplay day or commemorate a beloved planet being demoted from planet status (poor Pluto) but, more importantly than that (to me 🤣) it celebrates waffles!Â
Â
Believed to have originated over 400 years ago in 1620, waffles have been a staple food since spanning countries and generations. It seems to be one of those foods that have survived the ever-evolving and changing variations. Flour, butter, milk, sugar and eggs. Whether the toppings are savoury or sweet, most bases rarely deviate from the same recipe of which they began. Something about that feels quite ... magical.Â
Â
Simplistic in its own right but can be made however complex you want. The toppings and taste can cater to each individual person as they wish.Â
Â
For some families, waffles can play a pivotal part of family life: sharing breakfast together in the morning before everyone spreads off in their own direction to do their own thing at work, school, socialising... one of my customers does "Waffle Wednesdays" with her children and they make them together at home for a treat dinner.Â
Â
That's one of the joys of this wonderful creation though isn't it - it can be enjoyed for breakfast, brunch, lunch, snack, dinner, dessert or supper. The possibilities are quite literally endless!Â
Â
You can make large ones, medium ones, small ones; crispy ones, fluffy ones, flat onee; savoury ones, sweet ones or a mixture of the two.Â
Â
I seem to flit between having a sweet or savoury preference for waffle toppings. I think it depends what time of day I'm eating one. For breakfast I love the strawbs. A slightly crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside waffle topped with sliced strawberries, a dollop of cream and a drizzle of honey. For lunch or dinner I prefer something a little mote savoury - crispy chicken and bacon with a drizzle of maple syrup is always a winner. So good.Â

This month we've introduced a Chicken Tender topped waffle, with drizzled BBQ sauce, melted cheese and spring onion. So many bursts of flavour in every single bite it is absolutely delicious (if I do say so myself!) and is available now in the shop. We can also cater for our gluten free friends with this one so don't be afraid to make your dietary requirements known.Â
Â
Other options we have include:
- cherry pieÂ
- eton mess
- smoked bacon and syrup

And so many more!Â
